Rice dumplings Singapore: 7 top spots

From heritage Joo Chiat counters to Michelin-starred hotel kitchens, Singapore does bak zhang like nowhere else.

Rice dumplings in Singapore reach a different level during Dragon Boat Festival season, when everything from hawker stalls to five-star hotel kitchens wraps glutinous rice in bamboo leaves and competes for your attention.

Why bak zhang matters in Singapore

Key traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival include dragon boat racing and eating bak zhang, also known as zongzi. The festival is a cherished tradition in Singapore, marked by vibrant celebrations and the irresistible aroma of rice dumplings. These handcrafted delights, wrapped in fragrant leaves and filled with a variety of savoury or sweet ingredients, carry rich cultural heritage and stories passed down through generations.

These pyramid-shaped snacks contain sticky glutinous rice wrapped in fragrant bamboo leaves, and are packed with ingredients like salted egg yolk in the classic Hokkien or Cantonese way, or premium fillings like seafood and meat in modern renditions. The range on offer in Singapore is genuinely remarkable.

Some families still honour tradition and handcraft bak zhangs yearly, while others simply order them from hotels, speciality shops or online businesses. This guide covers 7 spots that make the ordering part very easy indeed.

Heritage spots worth travelling across town for

Joo Chiat Kim Choo has been in the business for 80 years, making its Nyonya rice dumplings and kuehs fresh on-site daily. It currently has 2 locations: its original store in Joo Chiat and another outlet along East Coast Road. Each bak zhang is a handmade labour of love, employing a well-kept 80-year-old traditional recipe with 22 expertly chosen ingredients and spices. Every triangular parcel is meticulously hand-wrapped to uphold the highest quality and craftsmanship.

Also rooted in tradition is Thye Moh Chan, a heritage brand with a distinctive regional style. Thye Moh Chan brings back its handcrafted Teochew-style rice dumplings for a limited time. Standouts like the Teochew Double Delight Bak Chang and Teochew Salted Egg Bak Chang showcase the brand’s signature sweet-and-savoury flavour profile, pairing homemade sweet tau sar with ingredients such as pork belly, shiitake mushrooms and salted egg yolk, a rare style in Singapore, with a vegetarian-friendly option available.

Each dumpling is individually handcrafted and priced at $7.20, available until 19 June. At that price, buying several is not a difficult decision.

Hotel restaurants raising the standard

Singapore’s hotel restaurants take rice dumplings seriously, and the results justify the price tags. Jade at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore returns this Dragon Boat Festival with its Jade Classics rice dumpling collection, spotlighting a special creation that pays tribute to Singapore’s hawker culture. The chicken satay rice dumpling reimagines the beloved local dish with tender chicken thigh, king oyster mushrooms and peanuts wrapped in glutinous rice, paired with a house-made satay sauce.

Returning crowd favourites include the blue pea Nyonya zhang filled with minced pork, mushrooms and candied winter melon, alongside the Hokkien salted egg yolk bak zhang. Vegetarian diners can choose the truffle and trio mushroom five-grain rice dumpling.

At Peach Blossoms in PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay, Executive Chinese Chef Edward Chong unveils a luxurious range of handcrafted rice dumplings. The new Traditional Abalone, Preserved Vegetables and Pork Belly Rice Dumpling features premium ingredients like abalone, Kurobuta pork belly and homemade preserved vegetables. Few starters to a festival meal could be more impressive.

Expert perspective on Singapore’s dumpling culture

Singapore’s rice dumpling scene is one of the most diverse in the region because it reflects the island’s multi-dialect Chinese heritage. You have Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew and Peranakan styles all competing on the same table, and that is before the hotel kitchens start experimenting. The seasonal nature of bak zhang production is also important: the best versions are made in small batches, by hand, using recipes that families guard carefully. Consumers are becoming more sophisticated, asking about ingredients, sourcing and technique. The growing interest in premium fillings like Iberico pork and abalone reflects a wider food culture trend in Singapore: people want both heritage and quality in the same mouthful. That balance is what separates a memorable bak zhang from an ordinary one.

Michelin-listed spots for a special occasion

One-Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant Summer Pavilion offers a traditional Hong Kong-style rice dumpling loaded with roast duck, roast pork, dried scallops, dried shrimp, salted egg yolk, mushrooms, lotus seeds, chestnuts and green beans. Each piece weighs 600g and is available for walk-ins subject to availability, or in advance with 2 days’ notice minimum.

Man Fu Yuan at InterContinental Singapore honours timeless traditions with a curated collection of 7 handcrafted rice dumplings, including a new pair of limited-edition flavours crafted exclusively for the occasion. The lineup reflects the restaurant’s vision of presenting a balanced experience with classic favourites and modern flavours for diners of all ages.

The all-new Kimchi Rice Dumpling with Kurobuta Cured Meat and Mushroom is priced at S$23.80 and signals how far the format has travelled from its traditional origins.

A neighbourhood favourite: Di Tanjong Katong

Di Tanjong Katong is a small, family-run heritage brand which started in Tanjong Katong, known for its handcrafted snacks and recipes that have been passed down for generations. For Dragon Boat Festival, you can enjoy its signature smoky bak kwa folded into a bak zhang together with dried shrimp. Instead of large chunks of pork, you get a dispersed mix of melty, caramelised bits that pair well with the accompanying homemade crispy sakura ebi chilli.

The Iberico pork Nyonya rice dumpling uses blue pea glutinous rice and winter melon, giving the parcel a striking purple-blue colour that is as photogenic as it is delicious. This is the sort of find that rewards locals who explore beyond the central business district.

Conclusion: make rice dumplings your Dragon Boat Festival priority

Rice dumplings in Singapore are among the most rewarding seasonal foods on the island. In Singapore, the celebrations often continue beyond the festival day itself, with races, cultural activities and food-led traditions taking place throughout the season. That gives you a genuine window to try multiple styles without rushing.

Whether you choose a heritage shop in Joo Chiat, a Michelin-starred dining room on Raffles Avenue, or a small family brand in Tanjong Katong, rice dumplings reward the curious eater. Order early, try more than 1 style, and bring a friend. SINwebzine will keep updating this guide as new spots open across the island.
